Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admitted his side were not good enough in their home defeat to Spurs but urged them to do better next time out.

Ten Hag’s Manchester United lost their third of their first six league games of the season after losing 3-0 to Spurs with 10 men after captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off.

But before Bruno’s red card, Manchester United’s form was clearly inferior even though they were playing at home and conceded a goal in the first 3 minutes when Mickey van de Ven broke into his own half like a winger and crossed for Brennan Johnson to easily shoot into the goal.

Ten Hag said: “To concede a goal after two or three minutes like that, it affects our belief. It was completely unnecessary. To concede a goal when a centre-half comes up and goes past a whole team on the right (of United) side and then a winger taps in at the far post, it’s the same mistake in midweek against Twente. We should have stopped it from the start.”

“We had our chances before half-time and in the second half with 10 men we had our chances as well. The red card definitely affects the game. I don’t think it will be a red card.”

“First of all, we have to deal with the situation and adapt. It wasn’t good enough. We have to accept it and do better. We have to focus on the next game and do things better than we did today.”
